GM Investing $30 Million in Wentzville Operations to Upgrade Stamping

Wentzville, MO. '“ General Motors announced today it is investing approximately $30 million in its Wentzville, Missouri, manufacturing operations to upgrade two presses in its stamping facility and improve overall production of GM's full-size vans.
With the investment, mechanical workings will be replaced by electronic systems on two AA3X transfer presses. 'The conversion will increase the performance and flexibility of the presses and provide the Wentzville stamping facility with new technology to produce high quality parts more efficiently,' said Joe Spielman, GM vice president and general manager of manufacturing. 'The investment strengthens the plant's competitive position and will enhance production of the Chevrolet Express and GM Savana.'

The upgrades will begin later this year and continue through 2007. In the last five years, GM has invested $20 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations.

"GM's $30 million investment in the Wentzville facility enhances productivity and demonstrates GM's confidence in the UAW members at the plant who assemble world-class vehicles," said UAW Vice President Richard Shoemaker. "This welcome investment is good for the workforce, good for the community and good for GM."

GM Wentzville Assembly built 173,600 vehicles in 2004. The assembly plant currently builds the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans.

The GM Wentzville assembly plant, which was opened in 1983, currently employs approximately 2,580 employees. The GM Wentzville metal stamping facility, which was opened in 1997, currently employs approximately 120 employees. Hourly employees at both facilities are represented by UAW Local 2250.
